housing is a human right, not a commodity.

Watching the Pod Save guys slowly be driven insane by staring into the moral abyss of a party they helped create the modern version of has been an absolutely perfect sweet spot of schadenfreude for me.

It's all third spaces, baby. Used to go bowling, used to cover Skynyrd in the garage, used to have a car club. Now we've got Theo Von on in the F-350 on the way home from your 11-hour workday.
Though I'm actually a bit confused on the causation. The idea that American masculinity prevents friendships between men sounds totally plausible to me, but are masculinity norms *that* much worse now than they were in 1990? Something has to explain the huge shift.

i recently told a room full of homeless people how homelessness didn't exist in Canada until the Chrétien/Martin federal LIBERAL government stopped building social housing in the mid-90s. they were shocked, as they'd been told that their condition was deserved, that it was their own fault.

it’s un-fucking-believable that Vancouver/BC/Canada continues to double down on ineffective policy that not only costs more, but is actively killing people.

happy long weekend 🍁.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

It costs a lot less to house people.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

Who on earth would hire someone who murdered* a Métis man with his car while putting the lives of many others at risk on a downtown street to consult on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside!?!
New: Michael Bryant, former attorney-general of Ontario hired to consult on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, has been fired. Bryant was halfway thru 6-month, $150,000 contract.

Premier's office: "Debate and discussion around this time-limited contract is distracting from the important work underway."
