CatacombGL
@catacombgl.bsky.social
Windows/Linux source port with OpenGL graphics for Catacomb 3D (1991), Catacomb Abyss (1992), Catacomb Armageddon (1992) and Catacomb Apocalypse (1993).
The young Id Software team intended "Grelminar" to be the lich and "Nemesis" the guy-to-be-rescued. Later on in the retail release the names got swapped by Softdisk.
More info can be found on Romero's blog:

There are only a few differences between the Gamer's Edge version and the Catacomb 3-D retail version. The most obvious one is that the names of the final boss and the guy-to-be-rescued are swapped.

The Catacombs Pack from GOG contains the retail release of Catacomb 3-D, but the Catacomb 3-D Big Box ships with a different version. It's the initial v1.00 release, exactly as how it was created by Id Software in November 1991 for the Gamer's Edge disk magazine.

I started working on the CatacombGL source port again. In the coming months I would like to get rid of the "beta" tag and work towards a proper version 1.0.0.

Currently I'm working on a fun feature: support for the Catacomb 3-D Big Box as published by @johnromero.bsky.social in 2024.

Programming is fun, but I can also enjoy some #doom mapping. Now available on idgames is the community megawad "Embryo", where the maps get smaller as you go!

Pictured maps are by me, @signaturereverie.bsky.social, @whybmonotacrab.bsky.social and ViolentBeetle.

Attention Mac users: it is now possible to compile and run CatacombGL on MacOS!

To be honest, I don't have any Apple hardware myself. However, Github user LifeKILLED managed to get it working. He was kind enough to submit his work via a pull request and share a screenshot.

I love the overall vibe in the #BioMenaceRemastered Demo, which I would describe as "cute EGA city meets apocalypse".

CatacombGL 0.5.7 is released!

The first version of the new year is unfortunately a much needed hot-fix. In the previous version I accidently introduced a crash when taking certain exit portals. The crash report from Github user DEA1HYT is much appreciated.

CatacombGL 0.5.6 is released!

This update adds an option to place the camera view a bit off-center, as was seen in the original DOS games.
Special thanks to NY00123, author of the ReflectionHLE source port, for helping out with fixing a sound FX bug.

Same here, no internet. That's why a CD-ROM and a step-by-step paper tutorial was a blessing. The level editor DEU would be considered very rough by todays standards, but luckily at that time I didn't know any better. It was pure magic.
