To fertilize, sperm must locate and recognize an egg. How? The structure of each sperm cell encodes a latent representation of this task. We use fertilization as a simple model process to study the nature of latent encoding. #ComplexSystems #ReproRocks

Corey Maley's 'How and Why to think that the brain is literally a computer'. Analog representation is hands down the most empirically tractable model to explain and predict how biological systems solve problems through their structure and dynamics.

How long (on average) would fertilization take if only one sperm were inseminated at a time? About 1,902 years! No wonder evolution parallelized this process! Used a geometric distribution to estimate with 2 hrs per fertilization attempt and success probability of 12/10^8. #Maths #ReproRocks

Cool paper modeling local self organization by enzymes depending on local substrate concentration. Macromolecules only do one thing... Stick to stuff. The range of behaviors that simple property produces is astounding. #ComplexSystems #Biochemistry journals.aps.org/prxlife/abst...
Sticky Enzymes: Increased Metabolic Efficiency via Substrate-Dependent Enzyme Clustering
Enzyme clustering boosts metabolic pathway flux and lowers toxic intermediates by self-assembling only where and when substrate is present, enabling an efficient and adaptive pathway processing.

What a biological system does at any given moment is encoded by evolution, but entrained by circumstance. All of our experiments necessarily shape the behaviors we observe. This lack of useful reference point is what makes experimental biology difficult. #ComplexSystems

Just listened to an incredibly interesting conversation on the Jim Rutt show about representation and some potentially relevant concepts for the future of machine intelligence scaling. The biological implications really resonated with me🤔 #ComplexSystems

Not as pretty, but now completely sourced from Amazon or Walmart, except for the syringe pump... Just a few cents per device. Leak testing with mineral oil, so I'm very pleased this didn't devolve into a mess😋
