📢📢📢 First systematic study of House of Commons specialisation in 40 years. 📢📢📢

Our typology is not perfect but we think it’s a pretty good start…
🔊 New article in The Journal of Legislative Studies

With @stephenholdenbates.bsky.social, we ask: do UK MPs specialise in specific policy areas or remain generalists? In the first comprehensive study in 40+ years, we analysed 1,295 backbenchers from 2001-2019 to find out.

This professor studies dictatorships. He helped convince Harvard to stand up to Trump
Harvard professor Steve Levitsky has spent decades studying democracies and how they fail. He's now raising alarm bells over what he sees as a slide toward autocracy under President Trump.

I started a new role in the Research Strategy Office of the University of Cambridge.

Out of 4 non-/semi-academic jobs I applied for (with easy commute), I received 2 offers. As social scientists, we have lots of transferrable skills and there are interesting opportunities out there. #ECRs #hope

Before – during – after

It's done 🎓

It took 10 years, but I am so grateful that @helsinki.fi and 2 amazing supervisors enabled me to live my life while getting there

5 moves 🇫🇮🇮🇪🇬🇧, a big fat Indian wedding, 2 children, a pandemic, exciting 'peri-doc' work (thanks @stephenholdenbates.bsky.social)

It all makes sense now why during the last few days the venue for my PhD defence was rebooked on the grounds of a 'state visit'.
When the 🇫🇮 and 🇺🇦 Presidents and their spouses hold an event in the same building at the same time that you defend your PhD... 🤷‍♀️
