With @stephenholdenbates.bsky.social, we ask: do UK MPs specialise in specific policy areas or remain generalists? In the first comprehensive study in 40+ years, we analysed 1,295 backbenchers from 2001-2019 to find out.

Not bad for an office view #Cambridge

I started a new role in the Research Strategy Office of the University of Cambridge.

Out of 4 non-/semi-academic jobs I applied for (with easy commute), I received 2 offers. As social scientists, we have lots of transferrable skills and there are interesting opportunities out there. #ECRs #hope

Memorable moment:
Marcel Reif, son of a Holocaust survivor (and public sports expert), quoted his dad and urged/reminded/warned German MPs and all of us to "be a human".

Hope for 2025:
May German parliamentarism and the majority of MPs stand up to the challenges likely to come after the elections.
