Also, peeking at my firs tpost, I said IX when I really meant X, so whoops.

This movie's script reaffirms and exposes problems in localization habits I often like to explore.

Aome characters do feel like stenciled-in archetypes, so you get some weird vocal mismatches in the prologue.
Rose's castings are both perfect though. She uses です (derogatory) in rapid fashion

82. Titanic (Japanese dub)

So Final Fantasy IX was basically lifted from Titanic? It had to be.

Like, Cal = Seymour, there's the splashing underwater scene, teaching to spit --> laugh, whistling, back embrace on a ship nose, etc, etc, but as soon as Jack shows up on screen it's like, "omg Tidus."

The localization into Japanese is interesting!
They translate the dialogue from all languages featured into Japanese and remove the sarcasm in focus of delivering the meaning of each line.
(The themes of God and internationality lose some weight in the translation though because of it.)

81. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Twenty years late to this one, but it's basically Everything, Everywhere, All at Once without the LoZ OoT Reverse Bottle Adventure mechanics?
(JKJK, but Eternal Sunshine is apparently one of those movies EVERY movie lifts from therafter because GEE.)

Adored the photography. That's the big one!
The dialogue is as directed as it needs to be, but it's so lost in hindsight that by the time the fake-sounding stuff earns itself, I'm already tired of the cast.
+Points for robbing the Three's Company wardrobe closet and slapping it on Jim Carrey.

Oh snap okay okay that clears all of this up cuz I like zeroed in on the word casino and i was like where the fuck...

No saaaaame. I've grown up Vegas, so sports and circus stuff is all over the place on and off the strip. When it's so normalized, you can't really hate the every-person for it. I just genuinely think it's weird to give such a golden pass to Japanese media on these topics for their given aesthetics.

But I don't think that's something the average person should be burdened to split hairs over either; like, I think horse lovers can/should watch the sports and not be forced to grimace over every little thing.
I do think a lot of individual owners who play can and do mean well though, as you said.

I'm of the [admittantly steep] stance that there is no morally acceptible competitive horse sport--plus rodeo and barrel racing have extremely low barriers of entry (even tho other sports "at the top" are no better). For every 1 good there are 30 bads that the 1 good is complicit to compete against.
November 6, 2025 at 12:57 AM
Yeah, I don't wanna hate on people playing a game in general, nor do I wanna burden kids with any of this, but the ILLUSION the game paints that all of these horses get to socialize with one another and live all hokey pokey between races almost makes it nefarious as an intro to equestrian sporting.

I don't blame any of the teenagers, college-aged, or even especially older folks who like her at all, which is what makes that such a tricky thing to criticize. I don't want kids to feel guilty for being entertained by things as they run into them, but adults in our relative age group? Fuck em lmao

I wonder if folks in, at least, North America are a little too optimistic about animal rights in Japan?
They're super on the hook for pet trading and bad conditions in zoos/aquariums/cafes, but leave it to holo fans to gloss over all that when Pekora brags about owning a fucking Senegal bushbaby

Like, I'm critical of pachinko/pachislot for glorification or gambling addiction that sorta comes with it thanks stuff like Yakuza too (even if it isn't a beeline, I think it and medal gambling falls into Yajuza's aesthetic for US players), but I think it stems from ignorance and not 1;1 complicity.
November 5, 2025 at 11:38 PM
The thing is, literally one google can send you to dozens of links of horse abuse incidents in J*pan both inside and outside of the racing scene, so while of course I'm not going to point individual fingers here, it's weird to see people go so far as to posting bet slips and not ask questions once.
November 5, 2025 at 11:32 PM
I've seen that criticism on the JP side before where, around the time of the Ouji Hiroi x Akimoto Sayaka incident some years ago? I've sorta side-eyed the dude ever since since it's hard to sit on that accusation while also being, out of all the dudes on Planet Earth, the Sakura Wars guy lmao

As you all know I am an extremely boring fucking person so I don't think I'm outside of my wheelhouse when I nitpick about anime horse girls
