Why is this horrible for Universities?

Just about everyone who isn't a citizen or green card holder already who's hired for a tenure track faculty position is hired through an H1B and then, after 3-5 years, applies for a green card.

This is literally "No more foreign professors can be hired"
Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

I'm on an H-1B visa. I'm a professor. Perhaps it's worth mentioning that my employer hired me after spending months trying identifying all relevant job candidates and determined that I was the best fit for the role, despite all the extra costs and bureaucracy involved in hiring a foreigner.

Thank you @johnconz.bsky.social, Sierra Arnold, @capilgram.bsky.social, and Lauren Schechter for visiting us @miamiecon.bsky.social this summer! ☀️

I love that our department supports this series & would encourage more departments to bring folks in over the summer. Here’s why 👇

Fun with healthcare in 2025: Come back to the US, test positive for Covid, use my insurer's telehealth in hopes of securing some paxlovid - only to be connected with an antivax doctor who calls the vax & antivirals "that Pfizer scam" and blames the vax for my symptoms.

Am I tripping? Am I screwed?

Got a new phone, forgot to install Twitter/X on it, and almost a week later I'm not even sure I'm missing out on anything?

Turns out, this was a little premature!

Happy to announce that starting in August, I will be an Assistant Professor at Kansas State University's Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning in the College of Architecture, Planning & Design. Little Apple, here I come!

Call me a dinosaur, but I just held what is probably my last ever Skype call.

It's an ancient platform, but it's what allowed this international student to video chat with his parents for 14 years - and I'm not sure its replacements are better?

I'll miss hearing that Skype ringtone. Farewell :')

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

In tomorrow's session of my real estate finance class, I am supposed to go over risks and how to account for them in financial planning - such as business risks (e.g. unanticipated vacancies/changes in demand), inflation risk, or legislative risk.

I did not anticipate my syllabus being this timely.

Am I imagining things, or did Trader Joe's (and, presumably, a bunch of other stores) just substantially hike a whole lot of prices to account for tariffs?

So much "winning" for the consumer...

@frame.work - I really like your mission of making consumer electronics repairable, but this really only works if parts are actually available.

Do you have any indication how much longer batteries for the FW13 will be out of stock?
April 1, 2025 at 1:28 PM
I love my @frame.work 13 AMD laptop dearly after a year and a half of daily driving it, but ... why oh why do batteries (of all kinds!) have to be out of stock right as its stock battery is turning into a spicy pillow?

Any ways to procure a battery (even a 55Wh!) in the US, quickly?

Polling the wisdom of the crowd: what's a good Skype alternative, now that it's shutting down?

Features I'm looking for are 1) reliable video calling, 2) a reliable indicator of whether somebody is online, 3) a simple UI that won't scare the elderly, and 4) is light enough to run in the background.

The worst thing about LLM's is that they've made the teaching part of my job so tedious. An LLM can generate an essay that technically fulfills any set of criteria so why doesn't that essay deserve a perfect score? They create a world where smart kids feel like suckers for caring.

Time to join the chorus of academic job market outcome posts!

I'll be spending less money on moving this year, as I'll remain a postdoc at the University of Cincinnati's Lindner College of Business Real Estate Center.

Better luck next year, if universities are still hiring?

This is Winston Churchill visiting Washington DC to request assistance in the war against Germany. Notice he is wearing a "zip suit" and not a traditional suit. This was to honor the British troops--the same reason Zelensky dresses the way he does.

Again, for 🇺🇸 observers looking for lessons/Narratives™️ in 🇩🇪, the story is "80% of voters rejected the fascists, the main surprise is young voters flocked to the left this year, & unlike 🇺🇸 the country held an election where votes were quickly counted & all parties accepted the results immediately"
February 23, 2025 at 5:55 PM
Seeing a lot of coverage of the AfD, but - to me as a German - the more consequential stories of this election are 1) how the SPD under Scholz lost as many voters as they did, 2) the (2nd!) utter failure of Christian Lindner not to run the FDP against a brick wall, and 3) Merz's political comeback.
