Finally home after a great #defcon33. Huge thanks to the organizers of @defcon.bsky.social and all the Goons for putting on such a great con. And special thanks to the @defconpolicy.bsky.social crew for making me feel so welcome. See you all next year!

Just remember that Security is like an Ogre. It’s cumbersome, no one wants to think about it, everyone assumes it lives in a swamp and that it will block you when you try to cross a bridge. Also, it has layers.

It’s impressive how the authors got through this entire article without using my favorite new word of the AI era, “slopsquatting”.

I got tired of OpenID and decided to write about RSA padding. What could be simpler than RSA padding?

Except I made the mistake of asking whether RSA PKCS1v1.5 padding is probably secure and it sent me down a rabbit hole of insanity.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?
(Repeat previous answer)

The amount of websites and applications that run on Amazon’s cloud platform (also Google’s and Microsoft’s to a lesser degree). Every couple years they’ll have an outage and half the internet just stops working.
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Most of the protocols that tie the Internet together are at least forty years old and were designed without any security controls in mind. It's a miracle that this stuff works at all.

"-le" is a forgotten suffix in English - it's integrated so far into words that we no longer register it. It indicates continuousness: to sparkLE is to repeatedly spark, to scribbLE is to continuously scribe, etc.

Which implies that to chortLE is to repeatedly do something called a chort.
