Must read 🧵
Jim Ryan wrote a letter to UVA detailing his "resignation" and I'm gonna get some fresh tea before I read it because I feel pretty certain I'm gonna be filled with righteous anger by the end

I'll do a thread but here's the full letter provided by the chronicle

If you have to get permission to teach in your area of expertise from people who are definitionally not qualified to adjudicate your expertise then you are no longer working at a university.

You’re working at a state propaganda factory.

Allow me to translate. October data was not collected as field staff were all furloughed. In some cases, that data can be recovered from businesses. In other cases, the window to collect the data has closed (consumer prices, labor force status) and the data hole may be permanent.

Reports of the death of the bachelor’s degree have been greatly exaggerated. Enrollment is near pre-pandemic levels, real tuition is flat or down, and the college wage premium remains high.

I explore how the narrative became disconnected from the data.

Wrong-think will get faculty punished in some states and could result in harassment anywhere. Avoiding ideas is capitulation. A possible approach is to teach the concepts and then get the students to think through examples without providing a list. Not perfect but I think we need day to day tactics.

When you’re the party of it, “it’s not OK to starve children” and for all their new liberalism, that’s basically the Democratic position, it’s hard to to outlast the party of “starving children is fun” when the ladder party holds the levers that allow them to starve children.
