I'm really pleased that @royentsoc.bsky.social is hosting a workshop on ethics in insect research later today at #Ento25. It's an area where the UK entomology community can and should lead the way. Can't make it? You can still access my slides here: drive.google.com/file/d/1rBzi...

GV: Had a data set that they were willing to share but the videos needed anonymising. Existing tech wouldn't work with children as they move too much!

So anonymisation would have taking a lot of time and therefore a lot of money. Neither of which is really available.

Now Dr Eon Kim (Manchester & Home Office) talking about Police recorded data - lots of this doesn't have permission of people involved in it and may also contain bias.

We are saving as much public data as we can. The other thing you can do is speak out. Tell everyone you know about what is happening (here, IRL, everywhere). We need people to know the consequences of these actions.
Ohhh look! People care about our work! Come find out how to help.

Hugely worrying!

I'm starting to actively encourage our researchers to avoid any data repositories with US ties - the threat of censorship is just too high right now.
Some troubling information

A red banner appeared on the NeMO (The Neuroscience Multi-omic) webpage.

"This repository is under review for potential modification in compliance with Administration directives."

What effing Administration directives relate to a neurosciece multi-omic repository?
