25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

It is really crappy but we need to keep all of our international research colleagues safe from being harassed by the Trump Thug Squad. Our department has already had a valuable researcher (who has been here on a H1B visa for years) forced to return to Poland by this vile administration.
Those of us at less risk of being detained should make sure that our international colleagues and friends always have company when walking through NOLA during #AGU25. Buddy system is good, travel-in-groups is better. Let's work together to keep our scientific community safe.
