*TWO DAYS* this week battling with formatting. *First* the damn makerbot and its stupid *json* files. And *then* this siglent sig-gen with its dubiously unformatted little-endian 16-bit 2's compliment.
POV me shaking my fist at the Siglent signal generator that I put on my desk so I could figure out how to program it via py-visa more comfortably than at the workbench. Sending the requisite binary is in fact entirely too simple to implement. In the siglent programmers manual, it shows an algorithm that string manipulates an array of 16-bit hex words into little-endian and then uses the python built-in "binascii" to format it to binary, write that to a file, then open the file and pipe it into the machine through the visa command "write". My first problem was that I had my device instanced as a "SOCKET" class and not a "INSTR" class, which caused the device to hang whenever I tried to send it the file. After that, it was a matter of figuring out that pyvisa has a command "write_binary_values" that has binascii functionality built in. So, I could simply pass that a numpy array of integers and have it format it for me. The "dubiousness" of the "unformatted-ness" comes from the fact that the siglent expects *zero* framing - no header, no footer at all except for the comma at the end of the VISA command string that sneakily prepends an optional byte to the file. The makerbot json is not worth anyone's time, let alone mine.
