So many guitarists have wanted to be Steve Cropper: quite rightly, and it made them better guitarists.
Fuck, this one hurts, for me the greatest guitarist, a musician in the service of the band and the song, who played on and helped create a wild succession of the finest records ever made. RIP Steve Cropper.

Goodbye Jerry Butler, one of my absolute favourite singers. So warm and expressive. I bought this LP when I worked at Our Price in Epsom in 1984, and I've been in love with his voice from that day on. His collaborations with Curtis Mayfield, then Gamble/Huff, all gold www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl74...

Jerry Butler was a brilliant singer, the nexus between music and politics in Chicago, a driven entrepreneur and crucial musical organizer. He was also a very kind and generous person as he took the time to speak with me at length for my research on "Move On Up." And his quips were hilarious.
