Yeah, this. Or just treat it like a soap opera. Batman is always my go to example. I either want stories about this near mythological vigilante from unreliable narrators, or I want real continuity where the characters age and change and die, but the mantle is passed down.

The other alternative is to take an approach like Transformers canon, which is to look you dead in the eyes and say 'Even the toy bios have their own continuity and every time you complain I add another contradictory origin for the Constructicons. Fuck you.'
