Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Brooke van Velden is giving WorkSafe six months to adjust to a new way of operating, according to a version of a Cabinet paper on WorkSafe changes that was emailed to BusinessDesk.

Just imagine if there was a country where capital gains were not taxed at all.
"One chart? What are we paying you for? I want more evidence of why the rich and vested interests at the AFR and The Oz are worried about how capital gains are taxed. Give us another chart!!"

Ok, since you asked nicely.

🧵If you’re interested in how the new govt budget stacks up from a human rights perspective, read on!

I’m part of the Human Rights Measurement Initiative @rightstracker.bsky.social and our scores for NZ are pretty concerning.

This budget doesn’t seem to address the problems.

I'm planning a thread later this weekend on taking a human rights view on the budget, but the summary is this:

Successive New Zealand governments have failed to keep their human rights promises, falling into the 'bad' and 'very bad' ranges for most things we measure.

Any candidate talking about 0% rates increases is either being completely naive or misleading the public. That will almost certainly lead to cancelling important infrastructure projects AND community services. We’ve been forced into this due to underinvestment from previous councils & governments.
Local councils and the battle for money
Local councils have more effect on our daily lives than policies from the Beehive. But more than half of eligible voters fail to have their say on who represents them.

Business reps are centred everyday in the news - their concern is profit not people. It’s time RNZ & others centred community orgs in exactly the same way for balance. We could hear from food banks; hsg advocates; Iwi, beneficiary advocates, renters, disability orgs to get a 360 on the economy.
