i think React shies away a bit too much from acknowledging its FP heritage. it's partially because you don't want to alienate people, and FP with its terminology is often alienating

but like.. i think it makes sense to acknowledge React is still fundamentally FP. that's why it's weird and wonderful

Yeah, for sure. We've definitely had them say things like, "this is weird but you're working with a reputable person and it probably won't be a problem. Let us know"

I wonder if this is a regional thing or a difference in practices. My brief interactions with IP lawyers have sounded more like what you described.

My experience with US corporate lawyers up till now sounds like what you want, they point out what is weird, usually something like "X is odd, ramification is good/bad for you/them, clients do/don't usually have this, we should probably push on changing this to something better".
