It was New Year's Eve in South Africa's Cape Peninsula, and gale force winds were coming in from the ocean. The path to this outlook point was treacherously close to the cliff face, and had the winds not blown in from the ocean, I wouldn't have continued. I crouched as I came closer to my outlook, and tried to stay away from the edge so that sudden gusts in the wrong direction would not blow me down the cliff face. Although the wind was screaming in my ears, it was a scene of serenity and breathtaking majesty. To my delight, as the sun set on the other side of the peninsula, the radiating clouds turned a beautiful pink and wonderfully complemented this scene. In the background the viewer can see humid ocean air turning into clouds at the coastal mountain peaks, which then are blown inland over the fynbos covered plains. Patagonia's Cerro Paine Grande, towering 2.6 km above, emerges as furious winds blow off its mantle of clouds, in a spectacle of the eternal fight between light and darkness. Torres del Paine, Chile. An unforgettable morning in Patagonia's Torres del Paine, Chile. Gale force winds transform the turquoise waters of Lago Pehoe into a raging sea, blowing away crashing waves and literally lifting the water off the lake's surface, all of this against the majestic Cuernos del Paine mountains. The gusts occasionally were so strong that, even though I crouched on one knee, I was blown over. It was so much fun! Shortly after a helicopter had dropped us off in the middle of the Tombstone range in Canada's Yukon, and we had begun hiking towards our first overnight camping site, we noticed ominous clouds and lightning quickly approaching us. Sure enough, within minutes we were painfully pelted by a wall of sleet. As if our prayers were answered, we were able to hide, wet and freezing, behind a large boulder, close to our camping site. As soon as the storm had passed, we realized the potential for great light, grabbed our camera gear and headed off to capture some potentially beautiful light. And beautiful it was!
