Need some distraction? Here are two random Oscar predictions.
1) If three foreign movies get Best Picture nominations this year, which is very possible, the Academy's old guard will start arguing that they should be ineligible.
2) The Michael B. Jordan Best Actor nomination is shakier than it looks.

I have issues with how the proshot was directed (was constantly begging a wide shot lol) but so glad that this amazing production was captured for all to see. It took me right back to when I saw it on Broadway.
The pro shot version of Merrily We Roll Along with Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez hits theaters this weekend. I don't see any reviews, so maybe there's an embargo, in which case it would be completely inappropriate for me to say "Do not miss it."

Call me crazy but Wicked: For Good is better than the first movie?? If only because Jon Chu doesn't butcher Defying Gravity so he can audition to direct Shang-Chi 2. Still a mediocre adaptation of a stage musical. Ariana Grande ought to land another Oscar nom - but as a Lead Actress.

haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

If this song was written for a mid-aughts satire about the sexualization of teen starlets, it would be hailed as a masterpiece of good fake bad pop music.

For Guts Magazine, I wrote about the movies that remind me of offal and the organ meats that remind me of movies. Big thanks to Jake for working with me on this. Unlike a plate of andouilette, it was a pleasure.

Halloweekend movie reviews: Radu Jude's outrageous, AI-assisted Dracula and Anniversary, a family thriller from Jan Komasa (who made the excellent Corpus Christi) that imagines an authoritarian takeover of the US. Sounds like a reach!

A belated roundup of new movies that hit theaters earlier this week, both involving female manipulators: Mistress Dispeller examines a rising phenomenon in China, while Hedda does all the things that After the Hunt attempts but way better.

Saw Nia DaCosta’s razor sharp
hilarious brutal film adaptation of Ibsen’s play last night and my god Tessa Thompson does it all in this movie, if she doesn’t get nominated for Best Actress I swear to god
“I’m committed to presenting complex Black women on screen, especially Black women behaving badly.”

For @ebertvoices.bsky.social I spoke with Nia DaCosta about her latest collaboration with Tessa Thompson: HEDDA!

Baby's first byline in a major pub - for Reverse Shot, I reviewed Chronicles of the Absurd, an unorthodox documentary by Cuban renegade Miguel Coyula. Its very existence is proof that creative expression may be hindered or stalled, but never stopped.

I seem to be the only person who saw the #NYFF63 screening of Marty Supreme who thought it was merely decent? Strong start as the Anti-Rocky until it's suddenly Uncut Gems and Good Time, then back to the table tennis. You can tell a lot was cut from the film, and it's made worse for it.

Sentimental Value: was on the verge of a menty b, but it was cured by senti v.

Joachim Trier's cross-generational family drama comes alive thanks to it's empathic ensemble: Stellan is stellar, Renate reigns, and though it's a relatively small role I'm stanning Fanning. #NYFF63

Roughly what Toni Servillo said, per Google Translate:

On behalf of what all Italian cinema is feeling right now, allow me to express admiration for those who courageously took to the sea to reach Palestine and bring a sign of humanity to a land where daily and cruelly, human dignity is despised.
Servillo mentions the genocide, though my Italian is not sufficient to say more than that.
