Recently @amyremeikis.bsky.social reminded my of Umberto Eco's 14 points of "eternal fascism" in which "it is enough that one of them be present to allow fascism to coagulate around it".

And well , there is a sh*it load of coagulation happening.

The AFR with the list of 50 richest CEOs in Australia.

Weirdly they are counting unrealised share holdings to determine how rich they are. But the AFR has been telling us that you can't count such things when trying to tax super balances above $3m.

Guess these people aren't really rich at all....

The thing that would be most in Australia's national interest when it comes to dealing with Trump is to simply ignore him, and when forced to deal his nonsense, feed it in to the bureaucratic meat grinder and respond accordingly. Governments aren't social media, everything isn't about now.

Memo to the media - it’s not your job to rehabilitate the Liberal Party.

Go find some other contacts.

You can actually hold the government to account without starting your reports “the Opposition leader today criticised…”

What a story from Carl Nassib, detailing a particular display of allyship from the Cleveland Browns’ offensive line before they even knew he was out. And kudos to Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor for channeling that same vibe. It’s what I saw in Tampa too.

The Coalition’s ritual boast that it is ‘better at managing the economy’ is simply wrong. Dismantling the myth that refuses to die is Dr Michael Keating, a former secretary of the Departments of Prime Minister and Cabinet. johnmenadue.com/post/2025/04...
Who will better manage the economy: Labor or the Coalition?
People are being asked to vote for the Coalition on the grounds that it is better at managing the economy. But the current evidence does not back up that claim.

Also on Reddit today, someone thinking that I am apologetic for being a white dude. Nah, friends. I think we all know that being a white dude in the US is pretty great. My sin, if you will, is thinking everyone else should have the same latitude in life that I get just by being a white dude.

The bond market this week achieved what other institutions - the media, the courts, the universities- have so far failed to do: Stare down the Trump regime. But how long this situation can last is an open question, writes historian Adam Tooze. open.substack.com/pub/adamtooz...

So weird that many in the media are still acting like what Trump is doing to the economy is a result of his stupidity.

This is so much illegal bullshit and, more to the point, an obvious payback to the tech billionaires who lined up like pathetic props at the inauguration. FTC chair Andrew Ferguson is exactly the unctuous toady to oligarchs l expected him to be www.politico.com/news/2025/03...

In a shocking turn of events, many of the people who said they wanted "free speech" actually just wanted to be the ones in charge of which speech is free.
UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is.
They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there.
They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.
