Older'n dirt. Sort of the half way point between Georgia redneck and intellectual Jewish New Yorker. Lives in PNW. Furry. Environmentalist/leftist politically. Draws and says funny stuff, successfully sometimes even.

Then you get Robert Howard who 1) writes with fairly tacit racism (humans differ innately by ethnicity), is 2) weirdly open minded (any human can be brave, decent or horrible) while 3) adding casually awful racism to narratives apparently unthinkingly, like how you might salt your food as a habit.

stopped by the Gross Out and they had bacon for $2.50, so I made spaghetti carbonara as breakfast/late lunch/early dinner depending on if a muffin is breakfast.

Also for $6 they had bags of fuyu persimmons so naturally my IQ dropped 100 points and I HAD to have some.

My cynicism tells me the reason this one atrocity will actually bring down a regime unaccountable for millions of deaths, was that the chief recognizable name was Jewish, and antisemitism is a flag we can all unite under, right?

Really wish I had cigs. I need to remember that just because I love cigs and have nothing I need to keep my lungs in great shape for, that doesn’t change how cold cigarette smoke is UTTERLY VILE.

Don’t think it’s accident I hit Friday/Sundays realizations, I think I’m being triggered much more regularly.

This also stacks with seasonal moods, more isolation, and family stuff so I feel far worse than previously. Depression really hit me earlier AGAIN and I really wish I had access to therapy.

#subpost perhaps the real murderer were the friends we made along the way (ie on a ritzy passenger steamer on the Nile/Orient Express train caught in a blizzard/a beach resort in England)

more D&D rant;

Tolkien comes across as basically a decent person with an arch-conservative background. LotR DOES have problematic racism; evil middle easterners, evil quasi-Asians, evil lower class urban Brits (orcs), noble whites (Rohirrim vs Dunlendings), noble savages (woses) BUT you notice 1/3
okay a PART of the D&D rant;

I feel like part of confusion about EVIL MONSTERS are D&D's fictional roots are at odds with each other; LotR, an epic in which Tolkien's Catholicism, conservatism *and* liberalism play out in a good versus evil struggle (not quite as dualistic as the first read) 1/5

uh oh, I feel a rant about D&D, Gygax and Tolkien coming on

WORSE I obviously have real mixed feelings

EVEN WORSE it overlaps with my constant grinding anger about Jewish identity and Jewish invisibility (also gets into my feelings about OWoD)

need to finish job hunt stuff ASAP to avoid this.

I forget which fantasy future earth thing I read as a teenager had the hero riding a WAR MORSE (moose), in opposition to the foul evil that lurked south of the border. I'm pretty sure the book was real tho.

it's weird, you'd figure that animation is a great fit for Tolkien and with Peter Jackson and Phillipa Boyens managing production it would be a runaway success, but "Merry and Pippin Go to the White Castle" somehow tanked in theaters

have you ever noticed how everything takes on more gravitas when you pretend to be a Jack Kirby villain?

In the MORNING
LAUGHING happy FISH HEADS...

In the EVENING
FLOATING in the SOUP!

the ever popular "KHAN!" sting

the ever popular "Looks like someone bagged one of Ripley's bad guys" strings

... also? Don't get old, kids, it's a shit deal. You wind up referencing your no-longer relevant movies while coloring your no-longer relevant take on fantasy art.

the part of Krull where Prince Corwyn is trying to make his way down to the bottom of the reactor to rescue Newt, before the whole thing blows up and leaves a crater the size of Nebraska. #soundtracks
oh yeah the part of Krull where Prince Corwyn discovers the Glaive in the Genesis Cavern. But watch out, Khan's out there! If we went by the book, like Lt. Saavik, hours would seem like days!

I should probably NOT get quite this much stupid enjoyment out of 80s vintage James Horner soundtracks being fairly similar/derivative

... that said. On earth, 300 years ago, I was a prince, with power and riches. Allow me to introduce you to Ceti Alpha V's last remaining indigenous life forms!

The Wolf, the Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species, L David Mech. Cutting edge research for a while based on captive studies, so some of it’s not quite accurate, but; non humans have their own worlds, their own behaviors, and you can actually learn a bit by watching. For me this was huge.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

If you have a few bucks to spare, I'd appreciate the assistance so my brain doesn't have to taser itself.
