There's a Goodreads giveaway for ARCs of my new book, I Will Kill Your Imaginary Friend for $200! It runs from now until November 17th. I've been assured all prize copies will still count towards keeping me out of prison, or I would not be telling you about this.

The Fisherman by @johnlangan.bsky.social, one of my favorite horror books of all time. The definition of a slow burn that rewards big. We made it! Happy Halloween, everybody. If you bought one third of the books I've recommended this month, you are very happy and completely broke.

Absolution by @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social, the fourth Southern Reach book. Every VanderMeer book comes with deranged surrealist horror and implacable dread, this one also comes with a neat foil cover! If you're terrified about the future's impending environmental disasters, read this. It won't help.

Generation Loss by @elizabethhand.bsky.social, a bleak but brilliant post-punk Nordic folk horror detective novel, if Maine counts as Nordic. It probably does.

Pick up any of @lairdbarron.bsky.social's short story collections for the best cosmic horror written today. For something longer grab The Croning. Like a subversion of literary fiction's darling "divorced academic character study," but one that spirals into completely bonkers horror.

Here's a makeup book: Wounds by Nathan Ballingrud. Collected shorts and a novella from a shared universe, that universe being hell. Incredible prose, endlessly inventive, it's a spiritual successor to Clive Barker in making hell feel like a place you can actually feel beneath your feet.

Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker, a pandemic immigrant's story about a crime scene cleaner in Chinatown haunted by the death of her sister and also very much actual ghosts. A lot of ghosts. More ghosts than you're picturing.

Between Two Fires is one of my favorite books of all time, but you know this. I won't shut up about this. Let's go with an alternate @buehlmeister.bsky.social for Halloween: Those across the river. Both a celebration of and subversion of Southern Gothic and Folk Horror.

All the setup, spirit, and atmosphere of a classic haunted house story, @cheriepriest.com's It Was Her House First is weirdly cozy, and also pretty fucked up by the end. Or maybe just weirdly cozy if you happen to be pretty fucked up already.

A brand new release, I'm not through Hole in the Sky yet but Daniel Wilson always writes corrupted Spielberg movies in your head. Here the Cherokee make first contact with a deeply strange, maybe hostile alien race in a sci-fi/thriller/horror novel that keeps you guessing the genre the entire time.

The saddest one-sentence story ever written.

I Will Kill Your Imaginary Friend for $200 is available for request at NetGalley! www.netgalley.com/catalog/book...
If you're a person who uses that, check it out. Early reviews are really helpful in keeping certain authors out of prison.

We had a lot of fun with this over the years on @1900hotdog.bsky.social, but you're clearly a fellow Hot Dog soul. Here's Custom Van Magazine's full papercraft Design Your Own Custom Van template. Of course they called it BUILD A VAN WITH A KNIFE.

Speaking of sexy space vans.
October 21, 2025 at 7:07 PM
Oh hey, I have the other angles for this one! Hot dogs added by me.
October 21, 2025 at 7:06 PM
Let's palate cleanse with the least problematic van.
October 21, 2025 at 5:34 PM
Speaking of terrible names for sweet ass vans.
October 21, 2025 at 5:30 PM
Car van is incredible too. But you know what that van is missing? More vans. Gotta get some vans on that van.
October 21, 2025 at 5:29 PM
Gladiator rules! It better come with that dog in the passenger seat at all times.
October 21, 2025 at 4:18 PM
Also find Gray Barker's BIGFOOT SHOOTOUT! A book very seriously worried that bigfeet are stealing hunter's guns for their army.
October 21, 2025 at 4:15 PM
I will have to physically restrain myself from van posting for the rest of the day.
October 21, 2025 at 4:13 PM
Following for van/cryptid posting.
October 21, 2025 at 4:10 PM
It's physically dangerous for me to be more hyped about @keithrosson.bsky.social's Coffin Moon after his incredible Fever House duology. A bleak and brutal vampire/vampire hunter revenge story in the vein of Near Dark. Feel free to mentally cast sex beast Bill Paxton.
