Working to grow the cleanest, tastiest, most nutrient-dense food we can. Birb partners enjoy safe, lifetime employment. Roos, too.
@jamiemerchant.bsky.social enjoyed you on Chapo! Have put in a request at the library for a copy of your book to read. Cheers!

Food insecurity sucks. Help us fight it at the link in my bio.

North side of the Retirement Run cattle panel tunnel is planted out! Alternating row of Red Cherry and Cherokee Purple tomatoes, underplanted with some sweet potato slips for ground cover. The sweet potato greens should eventually be accessible for nibbling by the chickens.

Some days, it feels like it might actually all come together! Little by little, large things can happen.

Finally got these lights up on the gateposts between the Vegetable Garden and the Retirement Run. Took about 5 minutes, but they’ve been on my to do list for weeks! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Farm life. 😂❤️

New video up on the YouTubes as I set up more Ruth Stout style garden beds. If you’re into that sort of thing, that’s the sort of thing that’s there. 🍿🎥🎬

Rented trailer to haul rented tiller. If I won the lottery—or am successfully awarded a grant—there will be signs, like my own 5x8 trailer and a BCS walk behind rototiller with a PTO and flail mower, rotary plow, and power harrow attachments. 🙏🏻

Yes? Hello up there!

Weed whacking the neglected hillside in the June/October Paddock. This area is overrun with wild brambles and honeysuckle, but I have an idea for how to reclaim it. Might make a video about the project.

Extending the Kiowa blackberry patch from one plant to two by bending over a nice cane and holding it down with a brick. It’ll root this year, and then I’ll have another one producing those MASSIVE berries!

Wheee! Black cap raspberries nearly there! Annie and I shared four perfectly ripe ones this AM. Delicious. 👨🏻‍🍳😚👌🏻

Hmm. Must have been a rough rainstorm—split one of my bush cherries! I’ll take cuttings from the slash and try and propagate some more trees. These also grow well from seed. 👍🏻

New video up on the YouTubes wherein I graft 3 apples onto rootstock sprouts in the Retirement Run. I also introduce Fletcher, my La Fleche roo. If you’re into that sort of thing, that’s the sort of thing that’s there. 🍿🎬🐓

Taking this failed apple graft and re-grafting onto shoots from the rootstock. If my new grafts take, the chickens in the Retirement Run will get to enjoy 3 new apple varieties in the years ahead: Bae Red from @gnarlypippins, Bramley’s Seedling from @queenerfarm, and Fletcher Sweet from @fedcoseeds.

OMG, y’all! It’s happening! My Hachiya persimmon trees have flowers! Might actually get fruit! Hachiyas produce an acorn-shaped, large (Often compared to a softball!) fruit that is ripe when soft, like an American persimmon. My two trees are 4 or 5 years old now, and almost 6’ tall. So excited! 🍊🍊🍊

“Mad dog” skullcap (Scuttelaria lateriflora) from @strictlymedicinalseeds. It’s going into a big planter in the Retirement Run I have for growing tea plants.

First order of live plants from @strictlymedicinalseeds! (Happily got seeds from them last year.) Excited to add Arnica, Skullcap, Elecampane, Witch Hazel, Chinese Mint, Watercress, and Pennyroyal to our farm’s “medicine cabinet.”

Looks like 3 littles hatched during all the rain of the last 48 hours! Bluebell is definitely more interested in protecting them from me than showing them off to me.

Well well well, looks like we may have pomegranates again this year! I need to continue to learn when to harvest them; last year picked the one too early. And this second one that failed to thrive its first year here has decided to resprout! An advantage of seedlings and cuttings over grafts.

Noticed these flowers starting to form on my Tamopan asian persimmon. It’s only 3 years old! Be excited if these make it—it’s one of the weirdest fruit shapes I know of.

Garlands! Festooned! However else you want to say it, the mulberry trees are LOADED with ripening fruit! It’s fun working with this old plant with a rich history of feeding livestock. 👍🏻

The rain inspired this Winter Deer pear from @bluehillwildlifenursery_ to leaf out! Very excited about this and other VERY LATE season fruit trees to provide supplemental feed in January and February when the Laying Flock is in Winter Quarters. 👍🏻
