The images detached from every aspect of life merge into a common stream in which the unity of life can no longer be recovered. Fragmented views of reality regroup themselves into a new unity as a separate pseudo-world that can only be looked at.
The second (see footnote) mentions that accented characters are called "arbitraries" or "peculiar" by British type-setters. I'm starting to get a picture of accented characters being viewed by British typesetters as fiddly, laborious, and worth charging a premium for.

More info in "The Methods of Book Design", OUP, 2nd Ed. 1966. Look at these two excerpts - the first, on how to cost out a typography job, specifically mentions accented type as something that's likely to cost more.

The only example in the catalogue I can find of French doesn't have any accented letters at all. Which is strange, now I think about it, given how multilingual the catalogue as a whole is.
