it's definitely an art and ode to human creativity. Whenever i make a new board for a project i find so much more than i could've ever imagined, a gift that never stops giving, years of human creativity and love for a craft that more often than not gets mistreated and yet, they've persevered.
The act of gathering reference is such a deeper thing than just a fucking collage.
It's research, learning, assessing and building on your knowledge base.
Even google image search is dog shit for this, crack a fucking book.

I love collecting art books, even for games I don't really care for, because concept art is just so cool. Naturally it doesn't all make it into the game, but the process of seeing these concepts and thinking "okay how can we implement this" is... fucking... THE PROCESS.

Using genAI for concept art is so fucking stupid because like... that's where you get the cool shit. Thats the blue sky phase where artists make pieces of art that will be seen by a teenager later and change their life forever. Why would you want to start from mediocre. Why would you do that.
