I think they're generally pretty great, tho always an inherent risk of oblivious ped's ambling into them. DC's wharf area has one just like this (sans helpful cobblestones), where folks often wrap up convo's on adjacent sidewalk, then sort of sleepwalk into bike portion as saying final goodbyes.
