I also think we need to have a real reckoning with “employment” as a metric when so many people I know have gig-type jobs and single jobs aren’t affording people these basic things they need to live
It seems crucial (and long overdue) that our national political discourse has finally shifted from an obsession with "the economy" to what actually matters: whether people can afford the basic things they need to live.

Bill Clinton's "It's the economy, stupid" was arguably, in the end, a plea for maintaining a profoundly unequal status quo.

If a "strong economy" can coincide with—or indeed create—record homelessness and insecurity, then maybe it's time for a change in terminology.

I'll never forget former LA mayor Eric Garcetti saying, "In a good economy, homelessness goes up."

A perfect illustration of what happens when "the economy" is measured by everything except people's ability to meet their most essential material needs.

"The economy" is GDP, corporate profits, and the stock market.

"Affordability" is wondering whether paying for your kid's medication means you won't be able to pay the rent.

From the AJC article: "Some people are being affected much more acutely by rent hikes than others, and it's the folks who actually can least afford it."

The same people hurt most by losing ACA subsidies are the ones being crushed by rising rents. The harm is never equally distributed.

I said "slowly," but that's not really true. Without healthcare, it won't be slow at all. Just quieter, and out of sight.
