I've had a Switch since forever and only own three games for it because they're so freakishly expensive

steam-as-console will crush if the specs per price are there and every steam game is 1/5 the price of the exact same game on other consoles

I suspect headlines like these are the progression that'll deflate the capex bubble
Research shows local language models handle 88.7% of queries, cutting dependence on cloud infrastructure. With a 5.3x boost in energy efficiency since 2023, local AI transforms large-scale processing and conserves resources. https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.07885

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load.

So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.

at some point we're just going to have a suite where my photoshop looks the same as my bluesky looks the same as my bank website and it's all perfectly Brensthetic™ exactly how I want them
one fun part of designing in a vibe code world is you can hand build a really cool website aesthetic, layer and dial in the CSS all day, and then if you want to take that and make some completely other app -- boop! -- you just ingest that codebase as a template

none of these quadrants are good or bad per se, but group synchronicity is an underrated maslow's need

yep. "they don't make 'em like they used to" -- well, yeah, they do, you just have to shop anywhere other than walmart and amazon

you might have to -heaven forbid- spend money on quality

(and it's still cheaper than equivalent quality in those eras)
The reason you believe vacuums in the 80s were better is because, with inflation the avg vacuum cost $400. Now you can get a decent top-of-the-line vacuum for 1/4th that price.

I realize the gas valve mechanical systems have the sophistication of a BBQ, but it is sorta wild that we just have unlimited access to a deadly neurotoxin tap inside our houses and no preventative check for "hey, this has been open for a few hours - you sure about that?"
ohhh my godddddd i somehow set my gas stove to max instead of turning it off when i was done making food, and i would not have noticed for hours if i hadn't randomly decided to wash my hands in the kitchen instead of in my bathroom after eating

incidentally, the first time I read it was ebook and thought "this seems like it's rendering completely wrong"

bought the paper version and it turns out...
The ebook edition of House of Leaves is terrifying. Imagine trying to get all that wild typesetting to render properly in every ereader. Brrrr. No thank you

re: AI-related deskilling depression

we see this in retirement planning all the time, people who work their entire lives on something identify with it and to retire out of it is often really brutal on the psyche

wrestling with it as a 20-30 year old is - as we're seeing - even stranger
