Born #OnThisDay in 1797 was author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who wrote the Gothic novel 'Frankenstein' in 1818. The book is considered by some to be one of the first sci-fi novels, with protagonist Victor Frankenstein using both science and alchemy to create a living creature from dead bodies.

IDK why this isn't getting more attention, but this is absolutely worth your time reading.
Check my latest article on Forbes to see the ironic parallel between our affinity to perceiving artificial intelligence as genuine intelligence, and the bias that leads to a similar result in the perception of confident, eloquent people as intelligent and insightful 🌀 www.forbes.com/sites/cornel...
Intelligence Illusion: What Apple’s AI Study Reveals About Reasoning
To distinguish intelligence from imitation in an AI-infused world we need hybrid intelligence, which arises from complementarity of natural and artificial intelligences.

Canadians, please seriously listen to what my friend Ariel (City Counselor in Somerset Ward in Ottawa) has to say about trans rights and the upcoming vote.
The attack in the Conservative Party platform on trans folks should worry all of us. Think carefully before you vote, and check out the @momentumcanada.net Drag the Vote campaign for an analysis of how all of the federal parties stack up when it comes to 2SLGBTQ+ rights.

As a fan of both, I love this!
Have I told you about Gary Retrograde, the holiday my friend made up? It honors the days between their birthdays, the time of year when Gary Numan is older than Gary Oldman.

This week I: let go of my non-running 2002 Buell Blast (3rd pic) that I owned and rode for probably 12-13 years and bought a deeply discounted leftover 2024 Honda CB300R (1st two pics). I'm hoping this will be the last motorcycle I ever buy, and I can't wait to get back into riding again.

Headline: Trump's Innovative Approach to The Canada Question
It's kind of cool to see that the NYT is treating Canada the same way they treat trans people. Like it's a thought experiment rather than a bunch of living people.
Canada as the 51st state? Trump thinks it would be a boon to his legacy. But it would also be a boon to Democrats, who would gain a lot more voters. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/17/u...

Up next for fixin' is this Sanyo turntable from 1979. It isn't anything special, but would be a fine starter/beginner turntable for someone looking to get into the hobby, and thus worth saving. It's leagues above something like a Crosley suitcase turntable.

Never change, Providence. And no, this wasn't me. I was at my friends' place last night and looked out to see how bad the snow was, burst out laughing and called them over to see 😹

Just finished this turntable restoration for a friend. It's a 50 year old Pioneer PL-12D. I'm pretty happy with the results. There's still a few minor scuffs inside the dust cover, but she's not going to care about that, and the outside of the dust cover is almost mint now.

He could have done literally any other gesture. A normal military style salute. A fist pump. Anything. Double middle fingers. The index finger fucking the hole made by the other index finger and thumb. Whatever. Literally anything else. But no. Of course not.

Decorated Christmas cookies last night with my family. I am pretty sure my sister doesn't cut an angel for me because of the angels I make. (There's two batches of cookies: one vegan for me and one non-vegan. She makes the cookies in advance)

People are disappointed that the guy was just doing it for weirdo reasons and not because of class consciousness but the class consciousness was literally the friends we made along the way. It was everyone in america saying that dickhead deserved it. It was us all along.

The creator’s introductory comment for this music video is “deny the claim defend the lawsuit depose the patient is some otherworldly type of evil.”
