WOW. A federal judge says he's going to issue a Temporary Restraining Order requiring ICE to make changes at the Broadview facility in Chicago, a facility that until January was only for stays under 12 hours "absent exceptional circumstances," but has become, in Judge Gettleman's words, "a prison."
U.S. Robert Gettleman is now giving his thoughts. He says, "I think the evidence has been pretty strong that this facility is no longer just a temporary holding facility. …

Immigrants and Americans pay USCIS for services. It has nothing to do with Congress. So what the USCIS director is saying is that he will steal those fees and spend them on other stuff so that people get mad at Democrats. He should be impeached. This is fraud.

I have employers who want to hire H-1B employees, but we can't prep new Hs during the government shutdown. The US Dept of Labor deactivated its FLAG website where we obtain wage data & file LCAs (prelim docs) for H1B petitions. We are at a standstill. This impacts our business & that of our clients.

This is a fundamental point that 99% of higher-ed coverage, and 100% of immig coverage, have missed.
A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.
