I would be remiss to not mention this scene from Borzage's Bad Girl with James Dunn - and how similar it is to the scene with Gary Cooper - right down to the subject matter, the articulation of shame and gaze aversion at the end, of an attempt to hide after being so vulnerable.

Rewatching "A Farewell to Arms" for a piece I'm writing about Borzage's evolving focus on nationalism and military obeisance - and I was struck by this fine bit of emotional acting by Gary Cooper.
