I would be remiss to not mention this scene from Borzage's Bad Girl with James Dunn - and how similar it is to the scene with Gary Cooper - right down to the subject matter, the articulation of shame and gaze aversion at the end, of an attempt to hide after being so vulnerable.

Rewatching "A Farewell to Arms" for a piece I'm writing about Borzage's evolving focus on nationalism and military obeisance - and I was struck by this fine bit of emotional acting by Gary Cooper.

Don't ask why I spent 20 mins making this. A video nobody has ever made before or asked to make, but Norma Talmadge and Godzilla kinda work as dance partners 💀

I just know that Frank Borzage would be absolutely seething right now. The Mortal Storm was not an instruction manual!!!

Frank Borzage's THE LADY (1925) came out 100 years ago on this day. Norma Talmadge as Polly Pearl is one of the finest performances in cinema history, and defined what the medium was capable of in terms of emotional power. crazyforborzage.substack.com/p/norma-talm...

It's horrible what happened during the on location shoots though - a man drowned and Borzage was very shaken by it - swearing off doing exterior shoots on location until Desire in 1936.

If I had a dollar for how many people have mispronounced Borzage's surname, I'd have a few hundred dollars

Me watching the final scene of "The Big Fisherman" in October 2022, where the two lovers Farrah and Voldi are separated on the promise they will one day be reunited, and realising that Borzage changes a person

I wanna see the "History is Made at Night" version of this photo - showing Charles Boyer in his Paul Dumond tuxedo on the set of Borzage's movie, staring intently at three pages stuck together with a paperclip

My thoughts on Frank Borzage's The Lady (1925) starring Norma Talmadge - and the near contemporary dearth of its emotional performance work.

My cat Chico (named after Charles Farrell's character in Borzage's 7th Heaven) has a propensity to stare up at this skylight in my house - exactly like his namesake tells Janet Gaynor's Diane to do
