M40 is a planetary nebula located about 5300 ly away in the constellation of Cepheus.

As the next to last stage of stellar evolution for stars between 1 and 6 solar masses, PN are short lived phenomenon, lasting only 30k years to 100k years before dissipating. #astronomy

So many stars! Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) is the largest and brightest globular star cluster in the sky. It is the suspected nucleus of a dwarf galaxy that long ago merged with the Milky Way. Stunning to view in a large telescope. Imaged last night as a live stack (10x30s). 🔭

My latest blog tours you through the stars and constellations of the northern spring sky, both the well-known and famous, and the obscure. Illustrated with photos I shot last week during a run of nicely clear nights. Enjoy!

Touring the Constellations of Spring
Join me in a guided tour of the famous (and not so well known!) constellations of the northern spring sky. The northern spring sky lacks the splendour of bright patterns such as winter’s Orio…

Vesta is the 2nd largest asteroid and the parent body to many asteroid family members and meteorites that made their way to Earth. It was the target of NASA's Dawn mission, which orbited it for 14 months in 2011-2012. It's a leftover from the era of planet formation. But what kind of leftover? 1/7

The barred spiral galaxy NGC 3718 is located in the constellation Ursa Major and was my target for 5 nights in spring. To the east of NGC 3718 is the galaxy NGC 3729, to the south the galaxy group Hickson 56 (technical details in the image). @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social
