Perihelion is the point in the orbit of a planet, comet, or other celestial body when it is at its closest distance to the Sun. Its opposite, the point of greatest distance, is called aphelion. For Earth, this will be in July. Today's Sun is quite active with flare producing Sunspots.

It's Wolf Moon weekend! The first full moon of 2026 has risen. Currently 99% full (reaches maximum whilst set), it will be a 'Supermoon' tomorrow at 2pm.

spaceweather.com reports 2026 could begin with a CME storm, predicting a glancing blow on NYD. If impact actually occurs, it could spark auroras in northern regions.

Comet Lemmon (C/2025 A6) was the most prominent comet visible from the UK in 2025, reaching its peak brightness and visibility in late October and early November. Discovery: Found on January 3, 2025, by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona. Closest Approach to Earth: Occurred on October 21, 2025, at a distance of approximately 56 million miles (90 million km). Peak Visibility: During the final week of October 2025, it was visible to the naked eye under very dark skies and easily seen with binoculars in the northwest sky near the bright star Arcturus. Perihelion (Closest to the Sun): Reached on November 8, 2025, after which it began to fade significantly.

6. Venus occulted by a 5% Moon in daylight!

On Friday, September 19, 2025, a rare and dramatic lunar occultation of Venus occurred, where the Moon passed directly in front of the planet, temporarily hiding it from view. The event spanned from approximately 10:34 to 14:26 GMT. In the UK, the disappearance (immersion) began around 12:48 BST (11:48 UT) and lasted about 1 hour and 20 minutes, ending with reappearance at roughly 14:05 BST.

5. An Interstellar Comet!
3I/ATLAS originated from the Milky Way and is estimated to be between 7 and 8 billion years old.

3I/ATLAS (also designated C/2025 N1) is the third confirmed interstellar object discovered passing through our solar system, following 1I/ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov. It was first detected on July 1, 2025, by the NASA-funded ATLAS survey telescope in Río Hurtado, Chile.

4. Supernova! This explosion of a star was widely reported in the summer. The first time I had been able to photograph such a event.

SN 2025rbs is a bright supernova discovered on July 14, 2025, in the spiral galaxy NGC 7331 (the "Deer Lick Galaxy") within the constellation Pegasus. Located approximately 40–50 million light-years away, it was one of the brightest supernovae in the sky at the time, with magnitudes around 13.6–14 SN 2025rbs is a supernova is caused by the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf star that has accreted material from a companion star in a binary system and exceeded a critical mass limit.

A partial solar eclipse was visible across the UK on Saturday, 29 March 2025, with the best views in the northwest of Scotland. The event began around 10:07 am GMT in London, reaching maximum coverage (roughly 30-40% obscured) at 11:03 am, and ended around noon.

1. UK saw two lunar eclipses in 2025: a partial lunar eclipse on March 14 and a more significant eclipse on September 7

#Astro2025Highlights
The total phase of the March 2025 eclipse was not visible in the UK as the moon set shortly after the partial phase began, but the partial eclipse was observable in the pre-dawn hours. The Lunar eclipse on September 7, where the Moon rose fully eclipsed low on the eastern horizon around 7:30 PM BST but challenging to view in its dimmest phase. Due to cloud, I could only photograph the latter half of the eclipse.
