MVA-BN remains a useful public health tool, but its protection appears transient compared to the durable immunity seen after infection. Boosters and next-generation vaccine platforms ideally mpox-specific,will be crucial for sustained global protection as the virus continues to circulate and evolve.

They also strengthen the argument for developing mpox-specific vaccines. Two mRNA-based mpox vaccine candidates have already shown promising preclinical results in animal models. Hopefully we will see these progress to human phase studies .

These findings make a compelling case for booster vaccination after MVA-BN, especially among smallpox-naïve individuals and those vaccinated intradermally during the 2022 dose-sparing campaign, since this route generated lower antibody concentrations than subcutaneous dosing in the real world.

MVA-BN induced far weaker and shorter-lived antibody responses than natural infection, particularly in those born after 1976 who never received smallpox vaccine. Neutralizing antibodies were detectable in only 4% of vaccinated participants by month 8, compared to most who had been infected.

Clinically, about 1/3 of mpox survivors still had visible scars 2yrs later mostly on the face, hands, or genitals. Other symptoms, such as fatigue or mental health impacts, largely resolved within a year. Importantly, no residual virus was detected in saliva, semen, or anorectal swabs longterm.

The researchers also confirmed what immunologists have long suspected: those who received smallpox vaccination decades ago still benefit from lasting immune memory. Their antibody responses to both infection and MVA-BN were markedly stronger than those of smallpox-naïve individuals.

Participants who recovered from mpox mounted strong & durable immune responses w nAbs persisting for up to 24 mths. By contrast, individuals vaccinated with MVA-BN, especially those without prior smallpox vaccination, had significantly lower antibody levels and few detectable nAb after 8–24 months.

He was a really nasty piece of work wasn't he. Goes to show you can be a brilliant scientist and still be s trash human being

Also, the co-discovered has a big asterisk on it because if we are being honest he and Crick stole Rosalind Franklin's work and she never got recognition for the discovery which was a central piece to decoding the double helix structure.

PS - The median age on the African continent is 17-19 years.

Will his approach inspire the other octagenarian & septagenarian leaders on the continent to continue shunning democracy in favor self interest and forever power? Either way none of this is good for a continent which holds 20% of the world's population. So much potential thwarted by bad governance
