Love the memories from my PhD, but seeing this pile of conference badges does make one wonder if we really need a new one each time

The August sunset view from Bocconi was worth it!

As this chapter closes, a new one begins: from September, I’ll be joining @lsegovernment.bsky.social as a Fellow in Political Behaviour. I look forward to working alongside the amazing colleagues at LSE. Please get in touch if you’re around!

This graph alone isn't telling much about norms, as it tracks the number of preregistrations in absolute terms. That might just reflect tremendous growth in experimental papers in econ. These have increased as a share of the (growing number of) published papers, as @paulgp.com shows in this graph:

It’s time quantitative social science catches up. Yes, code review takes effort, but it can be limited to a single question: "Does the code match the description?" Journal-run reproducibility checks (when they exist) seem to miss this essential first step.

Before diving fully into MPSA mode, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone at MZES, University of Mannheim, for hosting me this past month as a Visiting PhD Fellow. It was a wonderful place to focus, exchange ideas, and get work done — and I'm very grateful for the warm welcome! 🏞️

Made it to rainy Chicago for MPSA. I will be presenting three different projects on electoral accountability for illiberal governments in the contexts of Italy, Turkey and Russia. Happy to chat in the meantime!

Not just last time. In many places, it is still very hard for international scholars to obtain Canadian visas quickly. Those who know it don't even apply for academic events in Canada.

Resolutions, widely known as "LGBT-free zones", were adopted across Poland in a coordinated wave in 2019–2020. Using similar wording, they signaled a nationwide, state-led anti-LGBTQ+ campaign by the ruling Law and Justice party. We estimate the short-term mobilization effects of that campaign.

On a personal note, having seen the "gay propaganda" laws emerge in Russia, I’ve long wondered how anti-🏳️‍🌈 legislation sways the broader public. Similar laws got passed in Lithuania, Kyrgyzstan, Hungary, and Georgia. But Poland’s case let us systematically estimate the effects anti-LGBTQ legislation.

just searching for the journal name on Google Scholar, inserting ARPS, APSR and AJPS as sources, e.g. "chinese political science review" source:"ANNUAL REVIEW OF POLITICAL SCIENCE" OR source:"AMERICAN POLITICAL SCIENCE REVIEW" OR source:"AMERICAN JOURNAL OF POLITICAL SCIENCE"
February 13, 2025 at 11:08 PM
Sorting by total citations produces a ranking that makes a bit more sense. APSR, AJPS, JOP, and IO naturally rise to the top, and ES, PP, PSRM, and APR all make the top 100. However, you are right that some very decent journals might still be the closer to the bottom of the 100.

Having seen this in Cornell too, I start suspecting it's you and @gretaschenke.bsky.social who are behind this

Cool! Not a surprise to see @turnbulldugarte.bsky.social right next to you! I just made mine too, great to see my mentors @catherinedevries.bsky.social and @tompepinsky.bsky.social in the first row! Though it seems like I equally enjoyed some causal inference folks and memes haha

A fruitful discussion on the rise of the far right makes a great final chord of this ERC project LOSS, led by @catherinedevries.bsky.social at Bocconi. Happy to be a part of it!
