15 Aug 1742 // During Admiral Anson's voyage around the world 50-gun HMS Gloucester (launched 1711 and rebuilt 1733-7) was abandoned off Guam and burnt to prevent capture by the Spanish. She was in poor condition and had suffered severe damage in a storm. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

I'm now obsessed with this image of sailors on the deck of a U.S. Navy gunboat during the Civil War. The guy with the banjo. The guy with the pipe. The guy reading the newspaper. The guy holding a dog.

Due to rising temperatures the 17th century graves of Dutch whalers buried at Spitsbergen are defrosting and decomposing.
Some unique finds have already being lost for ever.
A thread🧵

Woollen Caps, 17th century, recovered in the 1980s.

Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" has perhaps the most memorable opening line in all of Western literature: "I hope you motherfuckers like reading about whales"

Next up for #HistoricalHearts on #ValentinesDay

A 440-pound heart from a blue whale, the largest-known animal to ever exist. It was so big, it had to be doused in 1,000+ gallons of formaldehyde before being plastinated by a team at Royal Ontario Museum. More: www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/pains...

Ghost Ship.

Well it actually isn't, but seeking this beautiful wooden 3-mastered schooner motoring in the fog in the Svalbard archipelago, I had to shoot it.

Landscapes will always remain my first preference, but if something else photogenic pops us, well why not...
