It's cool to remove the gacha, but the structure of the party and the narrative surrounding them is my main concern beyond that. Octopath 2 manages to make the cast feel like a party of people with tangible relationships between them, where this still gives the impression of interchangeable units...

There are a bunch to choose from, depending on one's tastes. I personally always go for the FFIV remake as my favorite, but there are also lesser known games I enjoy like Nostalgia (DS) and Contact (DS). It all depends on how far your definition of RPG can stretch!

Yeah the only games you need to pay attention to right now are Octopath 1 and Octopath 2. You can play them in either order, but generally being aware of Octopath 1 and things it establishes gives Octopath 2 some extra interest and depth.

Yeah it seems to just be a reworked console port of Champions of the Continent, a gacha mobile gambling style thing. I didn't look into it more, though, since CotC's structure lacks any of what interested me in Octopath 1 or 2.

The sad thing is that Champions of the Continent, the mobile game this new Octopath Zero is based on, has some cool black characters & even a whole faction, but it's a mobile game with gacha + the design to match. Octopath 2's merchant character had black designs before the one they went with too.

Ha! Now I gotta watch Meteor Man again...
