Feb 1980 was a groovy year for Mighty Marvel

A Sienkiewicz and Rubenstein picture for the Marvel Calendar. The individual daily entries are good fun to read too.

When I’m asked about “well designed games”, Talislanta always comes to mind.

Always flavorful and elegant.

AC drops with level, attacks per round go up, damage from open hand goes up, and Spartans get a spell like power related to mind or body at each level.

The goal with the redesign was for Spartan's to be a true martial class, one that can hold its own against armored warriors and fierce monsters.

Some creatures aren't really "punchable", the spartan's martial arts includes throws and trips, so they can redirect charging opponents rather than just striking everything.

Everyone gets proficiency bonuses, but Spartans can stack these bonuses. As a martial class, they get combat system bonuses

Another martial class from Bhakashal is the Spartan, the Bhakashal Monk. Spartans are masters of body and mind, and they gain abilities related to both.

They are a fighter subclass, so they can handle themselves in combat

Reading Warlord and thinking about Skarteris as a setting. Dinosaurs, swords, guns and monsters.

Sounds like big fun

Justiciars get special creed powers, spell like abilities at different levels.

Special creeds are interpreted by the referee and the player; they are intended to be inspirational for role playing purposes.

Justiciars get most of the standard paladin powers as well, healing, disease immunity, etc.
November 12, 2025 at 8:14 PM
Every Justiciar has a "special creed" associated with their god, this creed is on top of their imperative to protect the innocent at all costs.

Betraying the innocent or their special creed causes a loss of powers.

They also get special bonuses for their holy weapon

Martial classes! A Justiciar is the Bhakashal version of the AD&D 1e paladin, in Bhakashal this makes them a champion of Law

They exist to ensure that laws are, "... followed, set aside or interpreted..." appropriately

Justiciars can Detect Lie and Detect Intent multiple times per day

Bhakashal is a 1e AD&D retroclone, and part of being a retroclone is changing the system, not just the setting

One of the biggest problems with AD&D 1e was the nature of the spell system for all casting classes

In AD&D, your PC has to memorize / pray for spells before the adventuring day
November 11, 2025 at 9:45 AM
In addition to magical subclasses like Conjurors, Bhakashal rewrites many 1e AD&D spells to tailor them to the setting. Monster Summoning is a good example, the core spell for Conjurors, it is rewritten as a first level spell that scales with level, Mokuul the Mighty's Monstrous Conjuration.

Bhakashal magic subclasses have abilities tied to their area of specialization.

They have limited spell access, mainly conjugation, enchantment and divination type spells.

They have numerous ways to enhance their summoning spells.

Bhakashal has a variety of arcane spell casting classes.

They have different spell selections, casting mechanics and abilities.

Saw this tonight, it was really good. Took a lot from the book, the visuals were top shelf, and the casting was terrific.

HP bloat is one of D&D’s biggest issues. It lengthens combat, encourages violence as a default, and makes the PCs overpowered.

On the other hand, a class with a d4 for HP is too “squishy”.

Bhakashal addresses this by changing the base dice for HD and switching to rerolls rather than new HP
October 29, 2025 at 4:39 AM
Bhakashal replaces the multiple class based to hit tables with a single table, simplifying combat and integrating a critical system.

5 years of playtesting have made Bhakashal combat fast and furious.
