!!! Sorry to comment randomly on a post but these are some of my favourite books and I never come across anyone who's read them. Not that I don't love Raksura and Murderbot too, but Tremaine is one of my favourite protagonists

...and if you're on r/fantasy I think you must have been recced Brandon Sanderson but given that list of criteria I think I have to mention him. Of his fantasy 'Warbreaker' is my favourite, and it's a standalone and it's much less grim than Mistborn
