saw Mickey 17 and rewatched Okja yesterday and i've come to the conclusion that Mickey 17 is unintentionally a vegan film while Okja is a vegetarian film on purpose. this is why one of them is good and the other could only ever be mid at best

And most of this also comes down to what is “acceptable” for publication I.e. what are most gender studies scholars comfortable with reading. And the good theorists who call that shit out mostly self-publish bc their critical ideas don’t make cis ppl comfortable as they speak to reality

It also just treats trans people as a base for analysis rather than a group of people worthy of care, respect, and understanding bc there’s usually an implication that gender is being questioned so the mostly cis audience can expand their idea of gender

Probably the most frustrating part of trans studies within queer studies is how often material conditions are dodged. Not only is it obviously condescending but there is often a tone about “what gender means” that can put down the importance of medical transition for many trans people

i keep thinking abt when someone at the academic conference i was at over the weekend unironically repeated that hrt could never get banned bc it's too profitable for big pharma.
academica is fucked of course but they weren't even an academic!!
