@sambayley.bsky.social Your presentation on cuckoos at the Kildare Biodiversity Conference was great! You mentioned the fact that when a cuckoo lays an egg in a nest, the egg has colouring to match the eggs of the host - which is, as you pointed out, mind-blowing!

It got me wondering... (1/2)

Q: Why was the person responsible for the Blackwater fish kill never found?

A: it wasn’t anybody’s job.

I talked to the heads of all the agencies involved in the investigation, about why the biggest pollution event in Irish history fell between the cracks.

With a bit of luck, I'll have an abundance of Devil's bit scabious, Field scabious,Greater knapweed and Goldenrod. All seed gathered from local plants, pesticide free, insecticide free, & suited to the needs of local insects and invertebrates. #peatfree compost, minimal expense. Worth trying.

So that's it then. The biggest fish kill in the history of the State, and we're just going to move on, with no idea who or what caused it?

It would be better to label it a river kill.

Some major polluter is today breathing a sign of relief, while the river Blackwater remains half dead.

On World Bee Day, why not:
a) Put up a bee hotel &
b) Join the Buzz Club's Big Bee Hotel Experiment!
It's #WorldBeeDay 🐝

But how can you help bees to flourish in your own garden, balcony, or outside space?

An initiative led by our @davegoulson.bsky.social encouraged people to build 'solitary bee hotels', providing practical tips on how to do so. Why not give it a go?

The guidance is below 👇

The Sand Martin are wasting no time this year. With the sunshine lots have paired up & are building nests. The contrast between this yr & last couldn't be greater. Sand Martin are hugely weather dependant. Cool & wet conditions make for low productivity. Let's hope this year is kind to them.

Maybe something to help resolve anxiety: There's a new app for reporting wildlife crime: wildlifecrime.ie/reporting-a-...

I've not used it, but I've had an excellent experience with a similar "See it? Say it!" app for reporting pollution.
