My hometown where life is cheap but the rent is not.
Riverside County jails had the highest homicide rate among large jails in California from 2020 through 2023, state data shows. The New York Times and The Desert Sun found clear patterns of security lapses, negligence and policy violations by jail staff.
In California Jails, a Rash of Homicide and Negligence
The jails of Riverside County are plagued with unusually high murder rates and recurring security failures by an inexperienced staff.

I’ve got a relative whose disabled child helps make bullets in a bullet factory for 50 cents an hour and man that sums up the country these days
Over at @bloomberg.com , the terrific @josheidelson.bsky.social has a deep dive into the program that allows employers to pay some disabled workers far, far below minimum wage. Well worth your time. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
It’s Legal to Pay US Workers With Disabilities as Little as 25¢ an Hour
Whether it stays that way is up to Trump.

The men carrying out Musk's coup are Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran.

Make them famous. And, eventually, when possible, arrest them and charge them with multiple felonies. www.wired.com/story/elon-m...

What a disgrace
56% of Americans now expect Trump to be a good president, compared to 48% when he took office in 2017.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
