VE Day live: ceremonies to take place across UK and Europe to mark 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe
Commemorations to take place across the UK and Europe against backdrop of Ukraine conflict Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) on 8 May 1945 was the day the allies accepted Nazi Germany’s surrender in the war in Europe. The war in the East did not end until 15 August 1945, when Japan surrendered on a day celebrated as Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day). At 3pm BST Winston Churchill spoke to the nation and announced that Germany had signed an unconditional surrender of all German land, sea and air forces in Europe to the Allied Expeditionary Forces and Soviet High Command. “Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight tonight,” he said. My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the great British nation as a whole. We were the first, in this ancient island, to draw the sword against tyranny. After a while we were left all alone against the most tremendous military power that has been seen. We were all alone for a whole year. There we stood, alone. Did anyone want to give in? Were we down-hearted? Continue reading...

Changes to a National Park Service website that removed any mention of Harriet Tubman from a text about the Underground Railroad were “made without approval from NPS leadership.”

My NEH colleagues just heard from DOGE - demanding a 70% reduction in staff. Just obliterating federal funding for the humanities with no ready sources replacing.
These rumors have been confirmed, Blueskis.

I am enraged.
Blueskis, I am hearing rumors that DOGE is at the NEH building.

- They will fire 50-70% of staff.
- Almost all open grants since 2021 will be closed.
- Almost all NEH Grant programs will be eliminated.

Note: this has not yet been confirmed.

What is confirmed: DOGE CAN GO FUCK THEMSELVES.

Among the grants canceled was one helping fund a documentary about the Underground Railroad in southern Ohio. Defunding NEH is a devastating blow to local history societies, museums, colleges, and universities. Our cultural heritage is being sacrificed to provide tax cuts for American oligarchs.

State humanities councils were established by Congress about 50 years ago to make sure National Endowment for Humanities funds made it to smaller communities and organizations.

DOGE has terminated all four of the American Musicological Society’s National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants. These grants fund programs such as “Many Musics of America” and “Music of the United States of America.” Literally defunding the study of American music….for what reason?

If you/your grant admin receive/received an official looking email last night or today from NEH (letterhead, correct names), make sure you check the domain it was sent from. Official emails from NEH go through eGMS Reach and would have neh.gov as the domain.

Check in with your grant admin today.
A few tips for NEH grantees:
1) if you've spent money on an awarded grant but have not yet drawn down the funds, make sure to submit the paperwork to drawn down funds ASAP.

2) the NYTimes article suggests that "DOGE" might cancel awards. If you receive an email from DOGE cancelling your NEH award,

This action is lawless. DOGE is openly violating statutes that require such councils.
