More than two-thirds of Americans hold negative views of the economy, according to a Washington Post-Ipsos poll last month. Despite Republicans’ fervent messaging that Democrats’ health care demands caused the current government shutdown, early polling suggests a majority of Americans believe the president and his party are to blame. Protesters and organizers said they weren’t motivated by any single policy area — attendees cited frustration with everything from Trump’s immigration crackdowns to his slashing of the federal workforce to general malaise about the economy — but they shared a sense of concern that Trump was acting outside the bounds of the presidency. “The truth is that he is enacting a detailed step-by-step plan to try to destroy all of the things that protect our democracy: free speech, fair elections and independent press, the right to peacefully protest,” Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, said of Trump at the protest in downtown Washington. “But the truth is he has not won yet. The people still rule in this country.”

Three high schoolers founded a book club that reads some of the country's most frequently banned books after a state law removing books with sexual content was signed in 2023. Two years later, many of the books have been reshelved and parts of the law can't be enforced.
