Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

Appreciate the nuance and clarity in this exploration of chaparral vs forest management strategies for wildfire risk reduction. I'm hoping folks are catching on that wildfire management isn't a one-size-fits-all approach across ecosystems.

After thousands of homes were destroyed, many are looking for ways to make Los Angeles safer from wildfires. But clearing dense shrubs on the hillsides could actually make the fire danger worse.

Let's #degrowcars and live happier lives!
“…this extreme car dependence is affecting Americans’ quality of life, with a new study finding there is a tipping point at which more driving leads to deeper unhappiness…having to drive for more than 50% of the time for out-of-home activities is linked to a decrease in life satisfaction.”
How extreme car dependency is driving Americans to unhappiness
A car is often essential in the US but while owning a vehicle is better than not for life satisfaction, a study has found, having to drive too much sends happiness plummeting

It makes me so happy to see your book announcements, cover reveals, preorder links, blurb opinions. Please, give them to me. It's a gift. You want to know why? It means books still exist, writers still exist, and that is the world I want to live in. Yes, everything is awful. I still want books.

Remember that you were raised on stories about hyperindividualistic chosen ones where saving the entire world is the minimum win condition.

It's fine to tune your expectations down from that a smidge. You're not going to dethrone god today but maybe do something nice for your neighbors.

Always remember that Beowulf and Hroðgar, likely viewed as peak masculinity at the time the epic was written, openly wept and Hroðgar kissed Beowulf, because they were upset they'll miss eachother.
one thing i’m stuck on is this idea that “masculine” energy means license to act like a chud in public, as opposed to more traditional notions of public masculinity, such as those that put a premium on the performance of integrity, honesty, honor and generosity.
