He’s only 6 or 7 months old, so I’m probably projecting. But idk. He really is smart — inconveniently so, for me — so I wouldn’t be surprised if he grew into an intuitive cat

Shortly before curling up on my lap, he played with me *at length* by fetching the toy and bringing it back to me. Once again, could have been luck of the draw, but it was amazing luck given how difficult it would have been for me to chase his toys down.

(I can’t do Bridgerton because that same politicking re: romance and sex feels VERY bad and a little triggering to my aroace self. i hate that shit irl so why would I seek it out in my free time??)

Like as I understand it a lot of people enjoy Bridgerton because all the politicking re: status and love is relatable to them while also being completely foreign. But we’d call that society much more overtly status-conscious than others in America

To actually answer your question I think all cultures have that to a degree, but some cultures *require* it more as a survival strategy? But I’m also bullshitting a bit

I’m sure someone somewhere is out there like UNDER COMMUNISM THERE IS NO STATUS but I’m not one of those people despite being a leftist

This is of course re: my OP, I certainly can’t speak to African cultural norms vis a vis childrearing

Social climbing via your kids is a thing regardless of capitalism, for sure, but I think the larger point there is that in a system with community care and financial security there’s no need for your kid to be monetized

Can’t recommend it more highly, not just for that but for the profoundly human way it reckons with politics. One of the more beautiful games I’ve ever played and in my top three JRPGs of all time

His name is Huckleberry (named after the berry, not any fictional character) and he is the funniest living being I have ever lived with

So fucking funny when queer people try to exclude arospec folks. Like, please explain how having to make this calculus every day of your life is NOT queer

Also are you a video game person? If so, I loved how thoroughly platonic every single relationship is in Metaphor ReFantazio. Every relationship is so deep and complex and lovely, and sometimes ppl have crushes on you, but it is quite literally impossible to reciprocate through ANY dialogue option

These are sci-fi and not fantasy, but the Murderbot Diaries books and the Imperial Radch Trilogy are great for this. The latter has a main character who ends up with multiple partners, one of which is queerplatonic and the other is iirc pretty complex on the arospec front

Oof, ONLY platonic is tough. All my faves are either mostly platonic or platonic-centered with romance on the periphery. Curious to see how other folks reply

It’s common for folks on their deathbed to not die until the one moment their friends and family leave the other room, is the other thing. The body finds a way to make sure your death is yours alone
