You may know me from 🧵. I’m here now.

I like data and facts. A lot. Opinions are fine, data driven analysis is way better.

I’m hopeful always.

Nuance is essential, because our lived experience is rarely binary.

Cocktails🍸, whiskey & rum🥃, wine🍷.

Noise. There’s lots of noise right now. A cacaphony. I’m striving to ignore the noise, to not be distracted in my quest for signals facts and data.

Signals matter. Facts matter. Data matters. I’m searching for those to assess and understand, and know how to impactfully act/react.

Read beyond the headline.

Read further than the first paragraph.

There’s often more complexity, nuance and factual information in the full body of an article.

What Are We Drinking?

The great accounts in this starter pack help me figure out how to answer that question with recipes, news, reviews and even some history.

This is the start of this starter pack, it will grow as I discover more 🦋 people in the space!

And thank you!

I have and will continue to. But you know why I say it here ? Because @bsky.app is 30m strong and growing quickly. The collective wisdom and influence of users here is far greater than any individual democrat.

I can't say it enough. Bluesky can be the influence that can counter RW media.
No offense, Mark, but you have influence and power most of us don’t. Why don’t you speak up to those in DC you have connections with? Actions speak louder than words as you well know.

Seeing pictures of snow-covered New Orleans inspires me to make a classic NOLA cocktail tonight.

A Brandy Crusta—brandy, lemon, dry curaçao, and a whisper of maraschino liqueur. Shaken, poured into a coupe, with a sugar crusted rim doing double duty: both a bit of sweet and a snow-y garnish!

I have struggled with how to respond to Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook's descent into toxic masculinity and Neo-Nazi madness. While I have thought about quitting Facebook, I find great value in the connections and friends I have here, and it doesn't seem fair that I should lose that 1/4

One of the major lessons learned from the last year, especially from the presidential campaign, is that legacy media is broken.

New media ventures are the way forward.

I’m excited to see what @contrariannews.bsky.social will offer in this new era, at the vanguard of this wave of new media.
The Contrarian masthead already the strongest pro-democracy group in the country, probably stronger than all of legacy media combined. Check it out (and it’s already growing beyond this):

Contributors include: Allegra Lawrence-Hardy, Andrew Weissmann, Andy Borowitz, Asha Rangappa, Barb McQuade,

A great explainer piece that lays out how the underlying cause of the current CA fires is more complex than merely “climate change”.

It’s also a lovely piece of accessible writing broadly advocating for nuance in analysis, and a powerful example to us all.

Thank you @theeyewallwx.bsky.social
The initial reactions to the horrifying scenes from California this week felt visceral: This isn’t normal. And while it isn’t normal, it’s happened in winter before. Explaining nuance, explaining why THIS event was so bad, and looking ahead in California…

A question for other new arrivals from Threads:

Deactivate

Or

Delete

It’s likely a foolish hope, but deactivate holds the potential to return should circumstances change.

Delete is so final. But maybe it needs to be.

Advice? Thoughts? Your experience/plans?

Since I’m relatively new to the neighborhood, let me ask:

How do we feel about using the Block function here?

I’m leaning toward using it, but thought I’d find out what’s mainstream culture around here.

Today I’m building my following list, as I move from 🧵 to 🦋.

Recommendations for good, kind and funny people to follow here would be much appreciated.

Tech, snark, cooking, spirits & wine, current events and gardening are of interest.

Time to flap my 🦋wings to see what the algorithm brings!

My first wing flap on 🦋. I hope you’ve enjoyed the infinitesimal breeze it generated.

It felt wrong to have no posts while following/reading so much content from others.

Is it too literal to wonder if a single Bluesky 🦋 post can trigger the Butterfly Effect?

We’ll never know, will we?
