overall I have found my grad studies beneficial so far, but most of my classes are pass-fail, and I personally find it so de-motivating at times.

I joined a rec league volleyball team and played for the first time (other than a pick up game at work) since I was 15 tonight.

It was so fun.

I know the world is falling apart and we all have purpose driven work to do.

We should make time for fun too though I think.

I don't think electoral politics are like "the answer" but I do think PP would make many peoples' lives markedly worse.

and... we are gonna split the vote on the left

and liberals will blame ndp voters for not taking an "anyone but PP" approach

what if... liberals all tried voting orange?

another thought as I contemplate the end of this book as well as Krashen's language acquisition theories.

It is always easier to disengage from the attention economy when my mind is engaged with:

Compelling, intelligible input.

So we must make our surrounding compelling and intelligible.

Everything seems to be about what we pay attention to and how we attend to those things.

"How to do Nothing" has really oriented me towards this.

Krashen's view of second language acquisition as well.

Research on adhd and literacy too.

We need to pay attention to our attention friends.

I'm always trying to navigate difficult things w nuance but sometimes I start navigating it with an unintentional goal of not making people mad.

Being likeable is not actually high on my list of values.

I wanna do things with integrity and compassion and respect but, I don't have to be likeable.

I've always struggled to understand bottom up organising on a practical level.

Reading about the 1933 longshoreman strike in How to do Nothing (Odell) it occurs to me it is like a good jazz band. There may be a conductor, but it will only sound good if you are mainly listening to one another.

Just saw someone in a comment section say Wicked fans are getting weirder and I need you to know that's not true.

I was a musical theater geek in the aughts. I watched bootleg recordings of Wicked online.

I need you to know we were insufferably weird even then. There were just fewer of us.

There’s no such thing as “too many books”—only not enough shelves, not enough time, and not enough space for the dream library with a sliding ladder. But let’s be honest… we’ll keep buying books anyway.

Seeing people fight around about audiobooks vs books.

There's a literacy debate to be had about defaulting to audiobooks for struggling readers.

If you're taking in a book just for you... who cares? I like both for different reasons but why does anyone care how other people engage with stories???

When Eminem was in rehab, Elton John would call him weekly to check he was doing ok.
Elton himself beat an addiction to cocaine and alcohol in the 1990s.

WE ARE STILL IN THIS.
Wipe your tears.
This is the difficult business of hope and defying expectation.
We do not give up.
We run through the tape.

Y’all aren’t allowed to throw in the towel until I do. 😉

Big breath. Locked in. Let’s do this.

I had a history teacher who in 1986 told us that the Berlin wall will sadly not fall in our lifetime. I think about this all the time when idiots insist that some circumstances cannot be changed

I usually have a strict rule about working outside my contract hours, and any time I break it, I'm reminded of why I shouldn't.

(showing up for community building events is my exception to the rule though)

I love living here - we are so lucky to benefit from the work people do to make this community so vibrant.

After TEN years, Mount Polley is finally being fined under the Fisheries Act. To date, this company responsible for the largest environmental mining disaster in Canada has received no penalties, charges or fines. Not sure of details yet but this was just posted:

It’s the time of the year when people do popular lists, best book of the year or album of the year etc. If you made art, books, poetry, music, in 2024, you made beauty in a world on fire, in chaos, grief, with a broken heart, well done, it is resistance, rebellion, and I love you for it. Thank you

we really owe it to everyone we love and everyone they love and all the people who will ever love and be loved to commit to believing we are not doomed. they are not doomed. there is hope. we owe it to ourselves and our communities to hope, and then to act on that hope fervently.
