I disagree with parts of this (Fukuyama hugely underplays "cause #1") but agree best explanation for populism's 2010s-20s surge is social media.

There's an optimism for Europe in his thesis: we're the continent that sets democratic limits on digital giants.

Overcoming the barriers of hydrogen storage with a low-temperature hydrogen battery | Science Tokyo
A hydrogen battery that operates at just 90 °C has been developed by researchers from Japan, overcoming the high-temperature and low-capacity limits of earlier methods. The device works by moving hydride ions through a solid electrolyte, allowing magnesium hydride, which acts as the anode, to repeatedly store and release hydrogen at full capacity. This battery offers a practical way to store hydrogen fuel, paving the way for hydrogen-powered vehicles and clean energy systems. Solid Electrolyte for Low-Temperature Hydrogen Storage One of the most pressing challenges facing the use of hydrogen is its storage, which typically requires extremely low temperatures (−252.8 °C) and high pressures (350 to 700 bar).

Some parties have understood that most journalists prioritise audience over information. For many, it's better to cover provocations from some parties rather the content of their policies. Media are the 4th power, without the will to acknowledge it, put their responsibility is immense.
