No need for panic. We'll have The Monster Overhaul at PAX East, Origins Game Fair, and Gen Con, but otherwise we're down to our last 63 of the third printing. Fourth printing should arrive by the end of May.

I feel like Gavin Newsome is having meetings where the big question of the hour is “What do people not want OR need”
If you care about traffic — if you care about not being late to work, coming home to your kids, and saving your time — you have to care about GenAI.

GenAI has come to traffic management, and this cutting-edge tool will help the state better serve all Californians.

In this week’s blog, I analyzed spellcasting in the new Monster Manual and created a simple alternative using @slyflourish.com’s Monster Features from the monster-building resource document. This approach helps DMs run combat smoothly without having to constantly flip through the PHB for spells.

I want to praise Citizen Sleeper 2, releasing tomorrow. The sequel gets ambitious, using the 1st game’s dice mechanic to push gripping knife-edge systemic missions off-station across space. It’s not just more of the first game and I appreciate where it pushes its own mechanics forward. Pick it up!

Very dumb blog this week. It’s about using a D20 and assessing the vibe of it to bring your inherent narrative skills to the surface. Tension is said to be felt in the air so why not utilize it 😄 #dnd #ttrpg #dmadvice
The Vibe Check: Using D20 Rolls to Build Narrative Tension
In a recent session, I needed to determine when a pirate attack would strike Neverwinter. My players were busy preparing for the inevitable, and I wanted the attack to occur at the most narratively satisfying moment. Instead of planning it in advance, I tried something different: I used a D20 roll to guide the timing. Each time the players completed a significant scene or preparation beat, I rolled the die.

To call all third-party TTRPG products "homebrew" is dismissive of the massive amount of work, expertise, experience, and collaboration that goes into so many of them. Again, homebrew is awesome, but these are two different things. (3/3)

In my post today I look at a way to generate interesting factions by rolling twice on a "Faction Tag" table and coming up with ideas based on the combo. I also created a perchance generator embedded in the blog!
Easily Create Interesting Factions
Factions play a vital role in my D&D game, and as DMs, it's essential to create ones that are memorable and engaging for players. To achieve this, I’ve started taking inspiration from the RPG Stars Without Number. In that game, when creating locations, you roll twice on a large D100 table of "tags" to generate a base description. With two rolls on a D100 table, you can create up to 10,000 unique combinations, ensuring every location feels distinct and intriguing.

In my blog today I take a look at some monster books and my suggested guide to monster books by experience level. I absolutely love all the monster books I have so this was a fun one to write.
A 5e DM’s Monster Book Progression Guide
As a Dungeon Master, my go-to tool is the monster book. I can wing just about everything else in a session—NPCs, plot twists, you name it—but when it comes to monsters, I need the stat blocks ready to go. Over the years, I’ve built up a solid collection of monster books. After digging through the good, the evil, and the ugly, I’ve put together a guide to help you find the best monster books for your DM toolbox in order of experience level.

Towards DM-Friendly Backstories
Many players are disappointed or upset when their detailed backstories are not used in service of the game, and many DMs wish that player backstories were more table usable. I have found myself in this position as both player and DM, and after many different trials and experiments with my players I have found a solution that allows players creative freedom in their backstory while also giving DMs NPCs, locations, and other things to draw upon in their game.

Three RPGs that made me a better DM
As I hit my two-year mark as a Dungeon Master, I’ve been reflecting on what has made the biggest difference in how I run games. Out of all of the media and advice I consumed, it was playing non-5e TTRPGs that made me grow the most. Trying new systems pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me tools and ideas not offered in a normal 5e experience.
